While many composers wrote music for keyboard instruments in the 19th century, few devoted themselves exclusively to the piano as did Fr6d6ric Chopin (1810-1849). His love for the piano was immense. His intuitive understanding of formal design and brilliant methodology propelled his compositions to new creative peaks, making him one of the most influential piano composers of all time. His nocturnes, filled with mystery and melancholy, were inventive and beautiful. The melodies contained in this collection of Nocturnes are as alluring and captivating as any in piano literature.
Willard A. Palmer's deliberate and painstaking research is based on the original sources. Accurate, dependable, clearly engraved and spaced for easier reading, this Alfred edition ensures that Chopin's diligent pedagogy and melodic genius are faithfully represented.
Eugbne Delacroix (1 798-1863) was one of the foremost painters of the French Romantic movement, in addition to being Chopin's close friend. They first met in 1836 through their mutual friend Franz Liszt and soon grew to share an admiration for each other's work. Delacroix's portrait of Chopin was chosen for this cover because of its expressive, emotional qualities which so often are found in Chopin's piano music.
